haywire,

I am not totally sure...I know than still get into a 1-3/8". Thats whats on the spare-o-door. Lets sparrows in but not the starlings. If you are making a hole for a smaller bird and want keep out sparrows, not really sure of the smallest size?

Good luck !

I'm going to say no, but my Titmouse/chickadee/Carolina Wren boxes have a extra layer of 3/4" wood at the entry hole for a pecking guard. I seen sparrows try to get in, but they contracted lead poisioning before they were sucessful.

Nah.. I'm thinking of making a target stand that will attract it's own targets. A small 4 compartment house with holes that neither my martins nor my BBs can attempt to use but will be attractive to sparrows.

Should be fun,

Try shooting a sparrow, and then measure it...I never have measured one...

I'm ready to say that I am pleased with the .177 hollow point as delivered at about 1000 feet per second. Quiet shot, quick delivery and more than enough energy, to pop a starling or sparrow. The results are quick and humane. I put them in my compost piles.

I positioned my trap box so that I can pop them off the porch without getting lead into the box. Presently the activity has increased as the sparrows are building nests. With warmer weather promised this week the shooting should increase as well as trapped birds.

Yes they can get in a 1.25" hole. Apparently the hole if round needs to be 1 1/8" to stop sparrows. See tests done on a bluebird site

Thanks, I might build one when my new pellet rifle arrives in a couple weeks.
