when should nest building start
i am curious if anyone in the baton rouge/south louisiana area has martins who are building nests. i have 2 asy pairs and another asy male roosting in my two houses for almost three weeks and they have still not begun building nests. the two pair roost in the same compartments every night and every morning the lone asy male has an asy female with him and they use the same compartment. i was wondering if these birds intend to nest at my location or if they are roosting here and going elsewhere to nest. throughout the day i see these martins feeding and circling overhead so i think they really like my site. also they are figuring out how to get into the t-14 with sreh and one pair really likes the house. if they are going to nest when should they begin building?
Mine have been here for a month and haven't started building yet. If the weather remains warm, I expect it any time, but we have a chance of rain several days this week so I'm not sure. If yours are staying the night I doubt they would be building at another site. It won't be long, though. Hang in there.

Evan337. I wouldn't expect any nest building until the weather straightens out some. If it's cool, they're more concerned with finding enough insects to stay alive. Most animals and birds are smarter than we give them credit for. They'll hold off on building until they're well fed, and they feel there are enough insects to sustain themselves and their babies.
