Lake St Clair, Ontario 4/23/11
I have been watching daily for signs that they have arrived. They usually arrive around the 16th of April. I was getting concerned because of the heavy storms hitting the south and southwest. I havn't put up the house yet because there have been several sparrows flying around.
Well good news.... this morning I saw 3 circling around where the house was (in the lake) It took me 45 minutes to get the house up and within 2 minutes they were home. It is a great feeling seeing them and hearing their chatter again. They wouldn't quite down they had some real stories to tell.
Its around six o clock and the count is up to 7. The sparrows tried to grab a room but it looks like he gave up after the other 4 showed up.
Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
