I have made the switch to sreh. Then I start seeing all these post starling breaches. Sreh. I thought tell me they are playing. Now today I'm in the window watching out when 2 starlings fly out and down to the ground from the back of the gemini. They came out of my super gourd with a tunnel conly2 entrance . They where on the ground looking for nesting stuff. But then it was all over when my husband cracked open the patio door and blew them both away with one shot from a buckshot. Seems cruel wish they would all just go to the ss controller. Iv heard a lot of people saying they have made the switch, and its hard and even harder when you here they still get in. But just think with the sreh I know less starlings will get in .

Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.

2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)

2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.

2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged

2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(

2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.

2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.

Well, from what I hear, the only way starlings can get into bird heaven is through a very small SREH opening at the pearly gates.

If your porch is more than 1/8 of an inch below the hole, then female starlings will get in from time to time. Just raise the level of your porches to where they are nearly flush. That will keep them out!

I have had starlings building nests in my Excluder II and Conley 2 gourds this year. I am going to build up the porches and see if that works keeping them out.

Porches should be mounted 1/8th inch or less from the bottom of the SREH. If your porches are lower, add a layer or two to your porch surface to bring it up to 1/8th inch or less from the bottom of the opening.

We raised the porch on the Excluder II gourd to a little less than 1/8 " below the opening. That also raised the inside porch to the same height. I hope that won't create problems with them being able to exit the gourd. I'm going to watch carefully the next couple of days.
