My first ASY male landed on my gourd rack this morning around 10am. He was soon followed by a second ASY male. The first went in and out of several gourds checking it all out and stayed for about an hour. Off and on throughout the day, he brought back lady friends, one at a time. The females never went inside a gourd but landed on them and checked them over. At the end of the day, he came back around 6pm with a lady in tow trying his best to get her to land but was unsuccessful. After that he left when she did and they are camped out somewhere else tonight. The main thing is, he was very interested in my site and made several attempts today to bring a girlfriend here. It was a great first day at our new house! Hopefully tomorrow he will be back with more friends and he will be the start of a new colony. Good luck all!

Thanks to all! He's been back today defending the rack against HOSP (those that i haven't shot or trapped yet!). And you are right Mr. Rubble, I am among the older crowd! The Flintstones were one of my favorites. :grin:

It is still so very, very cold here in NE KS.

I cleaned out my SKS martin house last fall. I have one of the plastic ones sold in Farm stores, they are all over the place up here. The roof is Dark green, and the sides of the house, are beige. After I had cleaned it out. I spray painted the sides white and the roof also. I seemed to make it cooler for the martins.

I darkened the crescent door closures with permanent black magic marker. It sure has faked out the sparrows, but gives the illusion of them being open for business for the martins when they show up. I opened them too soon last year, and had a devil of a time keeping the sparrows out.

I am trying to talk my husband into making a sparrowtrap for me or putting one in my bluebird box, since the bluebirds have seemed to prefer squirrel holes in my 65 ft maple. We don't have too many of them around here, but, have seen more finches, robins, and geese fly over head this year than ever before, and so early too! I'm going to experiment with a new starling/sparrow trap i want to build. If it works, I'll post pics. Good luck.

2016- 33 pairs at Raleigh site, 1 pair at home site.
2017- 34 pairs at Raleigh site, 3 pairs + extra SYs at home site
2018- 33 pairs at Raleigh site, 5 pairs + extra SYs at home site
2019 - 32 pairs at Raleigh site, 7 pairs at home site, 2 pairs at new Holly Springs park site

That is exciting! Sounds like what I experienced last year. Hope they (the martins!) stay for you!
