i just wanted to show a homemade martin gourd that i made. It is made out of a vinyl fence post with a conley 2 entrance. It has a clean out on the other end and two pvc 90's for vents. The gourd slides onto a gourd mounting arm. I have my pictures posted now !

That should work good, and the martins should like it. I made some out of 6inch pvc pipe, and the martins really like to use them. I didn't like them much, they were heavy, so I gave them to my BIL and he is still using them. What are the lengths, width, and height of this cavity?
I think that martins prefer a long horizontal gourd because they are safe, and they can walk in and walk out. The entrance is near the floor. Its easy for them to make their nest and feed the babies. Its more difficult with a vertical gourd.
By the way, the entrance should be called Conley 2, I think it was named after William D Conley, but his entrance was slightly different. This entrance shown was developed at the Clubhouse forum but it has since been renamed.

Looks cool. Make sure the nesting area has a contained area or front to hold the nest material in place, and a textured floor. Babies can get leg splay on bare plastic.
This might be a nice way to trying offering single housing to rough-wing swallows. I have seen a photo of adding a black drain pipe to the front of a blue bird box...rough wing swallows seem to like to have a very deep tunnel like house. Wait..this is the purple martin forum!

John, the rough-wing swallows may like this design, but I am positive that the bluebirds would also like it. I have some horizontal traps for the S&S and I catch a lot of bluebirds & chickadees in them. That makes me think that they prefer the deep horizontal housing. I have vertical housing but the chickadees will not use it. Both the starlings & sparrows go to the horizontal traps much quciker than they go to my vertical trap.
Overall conclusion, horizontal housing may be much preferred by birds...

Gobbler T,it is 6inch and about the same size as a troy horizontal gourd.
Thanks,
I love the sleek look. It looked like 4" but pics can be very deceiving, thats why I ask.
If you haven't used them before, let us know the out come.

MartinMan68, since that is 6in (it did look like 4in), I think that you have an excellent idea here, and I can assure you that the martins will like it...great idea...

I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.
At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.
At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.
I never fail to be amazed how creative are purple martin people. GOOD JOB! I like the vents too.
Yes, some kind of system to roughen the floor would be needed. I use the nonskid 3M tape on the raised floors of my Trio houses even though the raised floors have some texture built in.
