I have seen photos of Trios with the tunnels on the side of the house. Has anyone tried to mount them on the front of the house? Looks like it may work if you take the railing off the porch.

I am using THG's with Conley II entrances and the martins like them. I also have THG's with round holes and my modified Trio has round holes. Only had one pair of starlings this year that I caught easily with the H&S starling trap for the THG with round hole.

I plan on converting 2 Trios and most of my gourds to SREH next year. I am here every day and can control the starlings but since the martins like the Conley II I'll use it. I would like to use the tunnels but will use the templates and raise the porch to 1/8 in. if the tunnels will not work.

I think problem is that tunnels on front will keep you from being able to open the doors (since they swing up - tunnel will hit upper porch and door won't open fully). tunnels on sides allow doors to operate for checks, etc. But maybe you could try it with shorter tunnel.

Thanks, Louise. That would be a problem. Can you do nest checks using the other doors that have been closed off?

Yes, if you remodel to have double compartments and plan the layout right, you can check via other compartments. One thing to keep in mind, doing nest checks via door to nesting chamber gets hairy with older nestlings. And that's what you'd have to do if your 'front' door can't be opened. I bet others have done it and can comment. When I had a remodeled Trio at home, no tunnels, I could use the front doors for nest checks so never had problem of access directly into room with older birds. I have seen checks on houses with access set up that way.

I'm going to use industrial velcro to attach tunnels to the front doors so they can be removed for nest checks. I'll remove the railings and add porches to all the tunnels. I hope to have it all done by Christmas so next year will be different for my colony.
