Baby fell out of house
Sorry I have not been on the forum for awhile, went back to work. Still love my martins and boy we have a bunch. I know that they do not live at my house but at dusk, we can count sixty or more! I live behind the ford dealership, plenty of wide open space and bugs! My question is: Yesterday I found a baby martin in the field, my husband was not at home so I could not lower the house to put him back. I put him in a shoebox and took him inside. When my husband got home, we put him up on our best "guess" as to the side of the house he had fallen from. He sat there, and it seemed as if the martins would not feed or tend to him. We tried to move him but could not. He stayed all night and all afternoon. My husband found him back in the field, he did not make it. It was like they just got rid of him. I thought is was okay to touch them and return them. How could one know what unit he fell out of. Heartbroken. Need advise soon!!!! Thanks yall. I dont want this to happen again.
Performing nest checks once a week is the only way to know where they go when they fall out of a house.
Take a magic marker and number the compartments. Write down the number of eggs and young in each compartment.
When one falls out you will have a good idea of the compartment he goes in.
Good Luck with your Martins

Thanks for your suggestions. I am a novice at this and cannot mark and count the eggs and hactlings. But.....if anyone lives in the Katy, Tx area and would like to see a real sight. Apparently our house and area has become a gathering spot. More martins than we can count! If you know where Champion Ford is on I-10, go past the new car dealershiop and make a right on Windsor Glen, between the new car lot and used car lot. There is an easement there. Once on Windsor Glen, just past the body shop there is a place just to the left where you can drive in behind the houses. If you come between 7-9pm, you can see quite the show. I dont know why they come here. Mavbe someone can let me know. As I said, I am a novice at all this. Hope you come and let me know what you see and enjoy. Bring your camera!
