I just put my house up this weekend. my thinking was it was to cold for martins over the past few weeks, however I got on here today to learn that they were all over the place already.

I am starting a new col. Is it to late for me here in Baton Rouge, la?

PS - I have yet to see any - even in the sky around town.

Patrick, it is not too late! Many older birds are still yet to arrive and ones that hatched last year are just starting to arrive. If you have an open area and do not let starlings and sparrows take over the house you stand a good chance to get some birds this season. Good luck!

I'm new at this, but I live in Houma, LA. and I saw my first PM just yesterday. I've had my S&K barn up since mid-January.

Click here to see PMCA's scout arrival report for Baton Rouge.

I'm sure people who know much more than me will be able to tell you more.

BTW, good luck!

Hello Patrick,
No way!! You put that housing up now and you will get lots of martins because lots of martins will be looking for new housing after all the hurricane damage!! You may want to put up different housing like gourds or compartment housing! And good luck John!

Patrick, you are definitely not too late. I put my housing up around feb.1 and have not seen any PMs. I checked with 3 of my neighbors about 10 days ago and none of them had any yet. I noticed that a few have come in at sites near here in the last few days. I am about 25 miles N of BR. I would say you are right on target for starting a new colony. good luck

Patrick,
Please don't give up, be ready , They can come at any time to your location, my advise to you is to play the dawn song/Daytime chatter , put up a few decoy's if you can...those are really good tools to attract Martins, the season is just now starting , just be patient and keep on keepin' on Brother!!!!

Thanks - I feel much better!

I put the house on my front lawn this year. trees are everywhere around here but I have a clearing on my front yard.

I am going to start playing their song every morning.

I know many homes are not going to be up is Southesast LA this year so I am hoping that I can help!

I am not giving up - this year or next or the one after that!

thanks again all!

Patrick,
I am in Lafayette, LA, and I haven't seen any yet either. I've been worried about not seeing any, because I know others in the area have them, but maybe the hurricanes and the cold weather have altered their normal pattern or something. It's good to know that someone else in the area is maybe having the same experience that I am, in not having even any scouts yet. I know I had some by this time last year.

I also am working on a start up, as I had an established colony that was
wiped out by a snake 2 years ago. I have not had any nests since then, but hope to get some this year, if they ever show, LOL! I've been playing the dawnsong for a couple days now, and have a decoy on the house.

Good luck to you!

Still no PM's!!

I have a decoy but I really don't even see them in the air! So what is the deal? Last year this time I would see them in the air and they would land on the house, never stay, however I would see them.

So should I just take the house down or keep it up until when???

Help requested!!
Patrick

Definitely keep it up.

There are still adult birds trickling in......and the sub-adults have yet to really pour in. It's those subbies that you'll really want be ready for, since they'll be looking for a new colony to start.

No Martins yet in Maurice either, however I have about 40 birds in Nunez who are already building nests. Still have 2 decoys, dawnsong each AM 4-7 and waiting. Trees are my challenge but I do have a large open area - hope to get some soon here.

I'm located in Bush, LA, and this is my first year. I've been seeing PM's for two weeks now. Three days ago I started playing the Dawnsong and I put up some decoys and two gourds, and put some mud around the doors and VOILA! I have my first pair starting to make a nest. I am so excited!

Don't give up, they are here! I am thinking about putting up some more gourds. I have an 8 room Coates Watershed house but I think the new gourds is what did the trick. The PM pair is staying in one of the gourds. It is a horizontal gourd. Someone told me that they are safer for the PM's because owls and hawks can't get to them as easily, and here in the country, we do have lots of predators.

I have only seen a very few so far, maybe 4-6 at the most, and very high up. And I have a tree challenge, too, but with some more prudent trimming, I think I'll be all set. I feel encouraged that you haven't seen any in Maurice, Cliff! I too have been playing the dawnsong and have one decoy on my house. I'm putting another this weekend on the other side.
Keep us posted!
