A week ago they were bringing in green leaves, now I have five eggs! Does that mean I am now officially a landlord? Should I check tomorrow to see if she lays another, or wait about four days? I have to post a pic!

Congratulations: :) You were a land lord when the house went up. You are now a :lol: proud :lol: land lord. You may well get another egg. If your female lays another egg by tomorrow you'll have a better documentation of when the first egg was laid and when to expect hatch. If there is another egg tomorrow you can count the number of eggs back to the date the first egg was laid. If you do not know the date the first egg was laid and there is no additional egg you will have a reasonable idea when hatch will start based on your observation when they were bringing in leaves. However, they continued to bring in leaves after laying begins.

Is that pinestraw? Looks like its been run through a paper shredder. Hey that might be a good way to soften up pine needles... may try that next year if it doesn't ruin the shredder. :lol:

Malcom;
I get the pine straw from the edge of my paved driveway. I noticed that the pinestraw was a lot softer where our cars run over it, so I thought I would try it. Thanks for the replies everyone. Billy

Billy, that is pretty darned exciting. Finding your first nest and eggs is a sure sign your pair is happy at your place. I hope they encourage others to join them.

Nest inspections allow you to keep your finger on the pulse of things, and perhaps you can now calculate when they should hatch. Knowing when, or counting back to when the first egg was laid is important in determining when they should hatch. Check again tomorrow if you do not know when the first egg was laid, and then count back six days.

Martins lay one egg a day so be sure to check under the nesting material for buried eggs. Knowing when the first egg was laid is important as most eggs begin to hatch about 15 days after the final egg is laid. Nestlings fledge usually after 28 to 30 days in the nest, but can fledge as early as 26 days after hatching.
Ever-Grateful,
Linda

Billy,
Beautiful, sweet little nest - the perfect picture of what a nest should be. Glad you got a picture! In about 45 days, it won't be so "sweet" smelling, for sure! :lol: :lol:

I did another nest check around 5:00pm, still five eggs, there was no eggs last saturday, so the first one had to be laid betweeen sunday and tuesday. Hey, I'll take five anytime! I still have a lone female that hangs around all the time. I thought my male was going to breed her also but not sure if that is going to happen. He has been following her around alot though. I have twelve gourds on that rack, two Troyer horizontals, and ten Supergourds. Most activity has been in the two Troyers. I do have them on the top row, but there still seems to be a preference, even though they are facing opposite directions.
