LOCKHART, TEXAS. ON 2/26 SPOTTED ONE ADULT MALE, ON 27 THERE WERE ONE ADULT MALE AND FOUR OTHERS, 28, ONE MALE AND 2 OTHERS( FEMALES OR YOUNGER MALE).

When we put up a new house on tuesday,about 10 minutes later there are about 12 birds around it. I do a check each night to see how many are staying in the 3 houses at tonight, I had 9 staying here. During the day there are about 20 birds flying around and landing on the houses. I counted about 9 males in the group. I am going to put up another house, am wondering what direction should it face, the same as the first or a different direction?

Hello Gary and Susan,
I would put the house in the same direction as the other one but at least 8 feet apart! That is what I did when I put my gourd rack 8 feet apart and the martins love it and have flying room around it! Thanks John!

I all ready have one like it, also on the other side of the house already have one from last year. The new one is on the side with one that is just like it but about 14ft apart, have not put , was wondering when to put it up?

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

gary, congratulations on your success...Its fun when you can attract martins so quickly...If you want to add another house or gourd rack, the martin season is in its prime time now, so put it up as soon as you can..The direction probably does not matter in my opinion...I always positioned them so that I could see the birds easily...
