Last Friday night, we witnessed an amazing feat. An ASY male left his compartment just after sunset and flew out low over our lake. He was immediately pursued by a Coopers Hawk and the PM ended up in the lake. Twice, the PM rose up out of the lake and both times, the Coopers knocked him back down into the water. Since our small boats were both full of water, we could do nothing but watch helplessly. That's when the little guy started to swim - we could just make out his trail in the water as he headed for the shore about 50 yards away. Next thing we knew, he flew right past us and up into 6A! I checked his compartment the next morning, after a pretty cold night (for Florida) and was relieved to find it empty. Amazing little creatures, aren't they?
There is no greater thrill than interacting with nature. Fledged 144 in 2014.

Last year we had two babies (jumpers) take a dive in our lake. Even though they couldn't fly, they were excellent swimmers! They returned to the shore on the same side as their housing and we were able to return them to their nest.
Hope you have a wonderful season.
