I purchased 24 of the new vertical gourds from the Troyers. I am really impressed with the construction and they seem to be made very heavy. They have a depth of 13 inches and that is just more safety for our feathered friends. They have a tunnel somewhat shorter than the horizontals that I have, but really do like them. The horizontals had a greater depth due to the fact of how the neck was made and the martins had to pass through that part of the gourd to get to the nesting area.

Last year wing entrapment was a thing that I had trouble with on the horizontals. Last year I could not take the gourds down to trim the gourds that had the lip due to the fact that the birds were near the age of flight. I will trim those before putting them up this year. Andy Troyer was super nice to me and sent the extra snaps to re-connect the tunnels to the horizontals after the trim process.

Don't forget and check cables and ropes for wear and tear. Make sure pulleys are well oiled or greased for proper working conditions.

Happy Martin year 2010 everyone, and I hope everyone has a blessed PURPLE MARTIN year!!!!!

Has anyone else purchased the new Troyer vertical gourds? If so I would like to hear your comments about them!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please keep our martins warm and safe down South until they can make their flight up to Kentucky.

We'll keep our eyes peeled looking  .
You can please some of the martins some of the time, but you can't please all the martins all of the time.
