House Finch Color

I've read that brightness (and possibly the amount.....I'm not sure) of red on House Finch males is determined by their diet. I've also read that HF males with more read are preferred by females. Anyone know what it is in their diet that brings out the red pigmentation? Any particular food item I could offer that would bring out the red coloration?
