Considering how to anchor a t-14 pole

I will be mostly likely using a 3" square aluminum pole for next season's T-14.
Are there any negatives to using a ground stake over a ground socket?

Does anyone have a photo of an installed ground stake for an aluminum pole setup?

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

I have put up a ground stake for my daughters square alum pole. There is nothing that I can show on the ground stake because its covered with the pole. Basically, the ground stake fits into the pole, and it is fastened with some set screws so that the pole will not rotate. The ground stake is a heavy round steel pipe, is about 3 ft long, about 18in sticks above the ground, about 18in is below ground, and its cemented into the ground. I put the ground stake into the ground , poured the cement into the hole, put the pole over it, and then leveled the pole so that it would not lean, then let it sit like that until the concrete hardened, and there was no wind to make it lean. Hope that this helps.

A ground stake sticks above the ground when you remove the pole, so that may be a negative for you. The pole is very easy to remove with the setup that I used, just loosen the set screws, and lift the pole.

I can't help with the ground socket, I never used one.

The attached photo is how I attached my pole and ground socket together. If I should take down my pole there would be about two feet sticking up to mow around. This is by far not the only way to do this, but I thought it might help you.

Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.

The ground stake is something that you need to cut around, but I cover mine with a 15 inch or so piece of 4" PVC with a cap on it.

The original ground stake for my 3" square pole is made out of steel, thus my need to cover it. I usually smear it with axle grease prior to winter, and then cover it with the PVC pipe.

My new 3" ground socket is made out of aluminum, so these steps may not be necessary.

If you still want a picture, send me an email and I will take that the next time that I will be at the site, which will be on October 3rd.

Good luck,

Bill
