I just built a Huber trap and caught a sparrow the first day! My question is I made the entrance hole 1 1/4 inch instead of 1 1/2 inch to try to keep the bluebirds out. Will this hole be big enough for a fat ol' male sparrow to get in? Thanks.

IMHO, the 1 1/4 hole should work just fine but like all traps careful monitoring is needed to ensure we don't trap good birds also.

Gwarnerjr, if you made the hole 1 1/4 and then caught a sparrow, then the hole is big enough. Please do monitor it though, because folks normally figure any hole a BB can get into, so can a EHS, and vice versa. CUL Lou

Gwarnerjr,

I think the house sparrows like a tight sqeeze to get into the compartment. It might make the compartment darker and make them feel more secure. I built a 3 compartment house with huber traps for sparrows and made the holes the standard martin size of 2 inches and have caught a few but plan to modify that down considerably. I think they'll find the smaller entrances more attractive. Hang a string or strand of dry grass out the door or hot glue a chicken feather neara the entrance. Hot glue a couple of white marbles to a small square of cardborad and place it in the botton of your trap. The house sparrows can't resist invading another bird's unprotected nest. The important thing is to trap those obnoxious male sparrows anyway you can. The only good house sparrow is a dead one.

Happy trapping,

Patrick
