OK let me start out by saying i do not work for or have any stock in the product i am about to discuss.
I was doing a Google search on Bluebirds and i came across an article Titled- Predators and Problems on the Bluebird Trail. I was on the Audubon Society of Omaha Web Site, The Bluebird Box.
Near the end of the article it talked about controlling bugs in a Bluebird nest. It said to spray the nest or the box with a Natural Insecticide called (pyrethrin). Pyrethrin is made to spray on open wounds on Horses to keep flys off them. The article ends by saying pyrethrin has been tested extensively on small birds.
I have seen posts here about the product seven. I do not know if Seven and pyrethrin are the same product, maybe different manufactures therefore different names.
I would like to believe that the Audubon Society would only recommend a product if it was safe to use. I found a product called KonkToo which is a Pyrethrin Spray.
This sounds like a safe product to use around adults or babies. Has anyone used this product?
Have a Great Day- Jim

pyrethrin is not a chemical, it is made from flower leaves (chrysanthemums - spelling may be wrong!) and it only works on leaf eating insects that kills them if they eat it. I very much doubt that the mites would eat it or the blow flies....It is a product that works well on worms of various sorts and it is used by organic gardeners like me, and it is preferred because it is not a chemical control..
It would work on open wounds on horses etc because the flies eat the dried blood, etc which would make it kill the flies.
chrysanthemums are a natural insect repellent, and some people plant these flowers in gardens to repel undesirable insects.
Sevin is not the same thing, sevin is a chemical control that has been tested for many years and has never been found to be harmful to humans or poultry if used in recommended values...If large quantities are used, it could be harmful...I don't want to start a debate, so this is the final posting on this issue by me, let the opponents post all they wish, I don't want the debate.

Jim. yes there is a great need in finding an organic product that is safe to use.. I have a friend in Arkansas,, Jim Jones.who has been using Pyethim for mites and bugs.. He has a 100 plus colony... and has many years of expearence , I have been trying to reach him all morning.,. I will;come back with the update..We need this organic product for our organic friends.. God bless you.. Victor
I would like to make a comment about pyrethrins. I think that they are relatively safe but they are indeed chemicals. Everything we use, eat, wear, build with, etc whether it is man made or occurs naturally is a chemical or the result of a chemical reaction. Also just because something occurs naturally in plants does not make it safe. For example; Arsenic occurs naturally in many plants but it is not safe as we all know. I am not a chemist but I remember from Chemistry and Organic Chemistry that the term organic has many different meanings and doesn't always mean they are grown naturally. Many Chlorinated Hydrocarbons such as the deadly DDT are called "Organic" compounds because of the carbon rings and hydrogen bonds. So always be careful when you hear the term organic. Be sure of what context it is being used in.
As for Pyrethrins themselves. The early compounds were originally derived from chrysanthemum plants but most of the Commercially available Pyrethrins are artificial man made compounds. So much of it is used worldwide there isn't enough of the flowers farmed to produce all that is needed for commercial needs. Also some of the pyrethrins are ones that have been altered to make them more effective (deadly). The basic structure may be the same so it is still a pyrethrin but just a few carbon molecules or other changes can greatly change the reaction and effectiveness of the chemical. What I am trying to say is that Pyrethrins although safer than many other chemicals can still be dangerous and not always as "organic" as you would think, so be very aware. They are not totally harmless.
I occasionally use pyrethrins and sevin myself but I try to be careful about their use.
Thanks
James

Well,, I am back again, I got Jame Jones on the phone and talked a long time Here is his answer'' Yes he has been using permethrin for 20 years..
He likes it very well..He mixes it at the rate of 1 ounce of permetthrin to 32 ounces of water... Spray compartments until they are wet. It stays effective about 28 days. MR.Jones says It dose the job.. Here comes the catch. It is not fully organic.. Pymethrim is also not fully organic and is very effective mites killer and also kills many other insects....
I ask MR.Jones is it legal??? his answer was..The Audubon Society said they reccomend Pymethrin in purple Martin nests.. I will help you in any I can.. You organic folks need the freedom to live with in your convictons as well as all the rest of us.. God bless you.. Victor
The words...I will help in any way ....... are my words not the Society....
