Martin Colony History: I have had housing up at my residence since 2000. I added some additional housing and gourds in 2007, and I have been getting purple Martins in my houses and gourds ever since that time.

Maybe someone can answer this, because I'm curious about this. I have a subadult that is protecting the PM house from other birds. If he does this during the daytime, where does he go at night? I don't see him after 8:30 PM, and then in the morning he is back. Does anyone know the answer to this? This is puzzling me. Does he go roost in a tree overnight or what?

Thanks,

Dave :???:

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

Not sure, but they could go to another colony, then return the next day. Maybe they sleep in the trees. Nobody knows where they go, banding data is not good enough yet to answer that question. Its a common occurance, I have seen 1 or 2 leave our colony right before dark, seems to happen on a regular basis, especially early in the season.
