I'm located to your north west by about 30 miles...(As you know!
)
Housing types - Natural and SuperGourds, some are modified with air vents, tunnel entrances, porches, textured PPCA added inside for traction, and tubes through the hanging holes.
How many poles do you have? One
How many units do you have available? 8
How many units do you have open? 8
Have you ever had martins? Yes, each year since I first began in 2003
If so, how many pair successfully fledged young? I'll have to search for my info for the numbers, but each year, after the sad first one, all my pairs have successfully fledged all their chicks. I've never had more than 11 gourds.
Was there an event that caused you to lose your colony? If so, what was that event? Thankfully, no.
However, after hosting a colony on the Air Force base for five years, we moved after my DH retired. Last year was the first season in this new town and starting a new colony. For 2008 I had only one nesting pair; they successfully fledged their five chicks.
The female died during the last week; the male had to finish feeding and fledging them by himself. He was a real trooper. I had dozens of visitors in mid- and late-August so I'm hoping for more birds this year.
Are there other colonies within 1/4-1/2 mile of your site?
There are many broken down, wooden, non-moveable houses around town. Very few have any martins in them; all are overrun with sparrows. I hope to convince some of the owners to let me "manage" or remove these houses. I'm going to offer to purchase them, as long as the bird funds hold out.
There is one colony about a mile or so away, just outside of town.
What is your region/state/location? Larimore, in North eastern North Dakota.
Are you located urban, suburban, or rural? HaHaHa! I live in an area that is considered a "town." There are three houses on my side of the block; one is empty. There are four houses on the other side of the block; two are empty. It's very quiet here, which is good for the birds.
Do you use decoys, tapes, or other attraction methods? Yes
What methods have you tried? I use decoys, Daytime Chatter and Dawn Song CDs, I premake nests in the gourds, and I smear mud on the entrances. I would wear a purple feathered costume and flap my arms if it would help.
What are your site competitors? My first season on base, 2003, I was overrun with sparrows. After dispatching more than 500 of them over two seasons, I no longer had a problem.
I did trap a few starlings, but they seemed to arrive and try to nest long before the Purple Martins appeared.
I had one pair of sparrows bothering my rack last season. I trapped and killed them, too.

I am an analyst so I am putting together a spreadsheet to find a pattern. I would like to see those of you who have been waiting for years to become actual landlords. I have been reading this forum for some time now and it just seems that there is a pattern, but I need all your feedback to pinpoint. I know there are going to be some obvious reasons (12 Reasons Why People Lose Their Martins), but there must be a way to attract a colony or re-attract a colony. I have got some theories. I am good at seeing details through all of the obvious. You all know the situation, when everything seems right, but you have zero Purple Martins.gobbler T wrote:Just curious, Why?

Perry,
Thank you for your response. I have been trying for 3 years, and nothing! I wish you and all the rest of us the best of success.

This is my 4th year trying.
I have a cedar T14, two super gourds and two Troyer horizontals.
All on one pole.
18 units available.
All but 4 are open so I can monitor the s&s.
I have never had any martins stay, some lookers though.
I believe the closest colony is 3 or 4 miles away and lots of them 5 to 10 miles from me.
I live in south eastern Iowa.
I live on the very edge of a small town could be considered rural.
I have 2 decoys, play the dawnsong, make prenests w/pine straw and smear mud around the entrances and inside.
Starlings and sparrows in abundance which I eliminate as soon as possible.
