Feeding video

Welcome to the internet's gathering place for Purple Martin enthusiasts
Guest

Greetings,

The last week or so has been pretty busy around bruntdog's place. With all of the &#$^@! weather we have been experiencing this spring, I have been feeding the martins quite a bit.

This has become kind of a local spectacle and I have had a few landlords stop by with lots of questions. Although I would love to visit for hours with all of them, the demands of the IRS preclude that from happening.

Anyway, I put this little video together yesterday morning so I could just send people to the link. Imagine my surprise when I uploaded it to youtube and found it had already been thought of by ooohhhh....about a hundred people. Larry Melcher really has a good video up that I just should have sent people to. (Oh man, It's even sticky'd! Honestly, I don't have ADD) I should have checked. Would've saved me a couple hours on saturday. By the way, Larry's flipper is a LOT better looking than the flipper in my video.

Even though it's review for most of you, I hope it helps someone out.

Here is the link.

Tim,

This is a really neat video    and it is also good to finally "meet you in person"

I know there are other "feeding your martins" videos out there and Larry posted just recently another excellent video, but I think there never will be too many feeding videos. Even though they all are about supplemental feeding each one is somehow different from the others, and interesting and educational. I liked the slow down of the video where you could clearly see the martin catch the egg. Was that martin #6?

Great job on the video and thank you for sharing with us 8)

Your Westie is so cute, and so much more white than ours

Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.

Tim,

Good job on the video.

Yeah Astrid, That's six,

His "spot" is on top of that nestbox just above compartment 4. Notice when he's around nobody else even makes a move until he has had his fill.

This is his fourth season here and there is no doubt it is the same martin. His learned behaviors are very distinctive. Each season he goes right straight to compartment 6. I have seen a couple of challenges to the throne, but six just kicks a$$ and takes names. I know that I will be very sad when his race is run and he doesn't return some spring.

Everybody should have a martin at their site with so much personality. I am really lucky.

I thought that was an excellent video!!!! I have not looked at the other ones so yours is the first I've seen. Thank You for taking the time I really enjoyed it.

I have never been able to get my martins to eat scrambled eggs but they will eat crickets, mealworms and superworms. I sure wish they would eat the scrambles eggs or at least feed them to the babies because it would be easier.

Thanks again for the Video....

Tim,
No need to apologize for this video. It's educational value is way up there!

I often wondered how the eggs were prepared and fed, even though I've seen many "flinging cricket" videos in the past. None were as instructional.

Thanks and pat the Westie for me. Good looking dog!

Tim,
Your video is EXCELLENT !!

You did the same thing I did.. Made a video, only to find there are many more out there. But, what is great about it, someone new to supplemental feeding may see mine, yours, someone else's... and actually go try it themselves.

I really like the way you " slow mo " your martin catching the egg !!

I vote yours gets STICKY'ed too...

Great Job. Martins need more guys like you
.... training humans for them !!

I thought your video was great. We have had success with feeding crickets but not with feeding eggs. Perhaps the pieces were too large.

Thanks for taking the time to create the "how to" video it is very easy to understand.

Tim,

Nice job! In focus, no camera wiggle, excellent sound...... I wish I had your talent. By comparison the videos I made with a borrowed camera are so wobbly it gives you motion sickness trying to watch them. I sure wish I could get a do-over of the video I made of baby martins landing on my wife for their meal.

Your video is not only excellent quality but very informative as well. This makes me wonder if Louise should consider creating a list of links to martin how-to videos of excellent quality and instructional value where people could quickly and easily find them whenever they want to.

Jeff, Was that you video I saw of the rehabilitation of the three babies?

The sound was bad, but the subject material was wonderful.

Joe,

Yes, that was my video. I sure wish I had the type of quality in my video that Tim put into his! We borrowed a video camera from a friend and that was the first time we had ever used one - it shows.

As I am sure you can tell from our video that was a once in a life time event for us. Oh well, nothing could ever beat the actual experience and we have the memories of that. I can't begin to describe the feeling of having those birds fly free and return to land on our hand, shoulder or head. One evening I was mowing the lawn on the tractor while Cathy was feeding the babies on the deck. One of them flew to me and landed on my shoulder. He rode around there on my shoulder for about ten minutes before flying back to the deck for another cricket snack.

Tim, your video presentation was WONDERFUL. Both you and Larry, and others that provide educational material via the Internet that helps others, deserve the highest honors......applause, and kudos.

My hat is off to you all as well as folks like Gus, and Donna, Randall and others (sorry if I neglected to name other names) that provide nest cams......The Internet is a powerful tool and those of you are the most Internet savvy have managed to capture moments and share with landlords attempting to host colonies or feed those in distress.

Round of applause to you all..........

I am sincerely sorry if I neglected to mention all names that have contributed to Internet education.........You are ALL doing a wonderful job of informing and instructing.
Ever-Grateful,
Linda

Tim,

Fantastic video, and very professional. Thank you for producing this. It is very easy to understand how to feed martins after watching it. Thank you for sharing it here on the forum. - Kent

Jeff,

The wife and I watched that video three or four times. I could not get over those martins coming and going between the two of you like a couple of puppies.

I kept wondering if those three babies came back to you this year, never dreaming that I'd be able to actually ask the person. Are your martins back yet? If so, did they give you a special welcome?

Can you tell the story about how those babies became orphaned? At what age, and tell whether they learned to fly on schedule, etc?

Maybe you can start another topic, and give the YouTube site, and then tell your story about them. I really did enjoy them. That video was one of those I could select when Tim's ended, so I did.
