Sparrows and Gourds

I swear I read someplace on this board that sparrows didn't like gourds because they sway too much. My gourds seem to attract sparrows and the martins just ignore them. Oh well, maybe more will show up.

Patch, I think that swing theory is outdated. I see them nesting on top of traffic lights that swing in the breeze in highly populated areas, certainly a little swing of a gourd is not going to deter them in your yard.

It might just be preference as I have 4 gourds under my T14. I have never seen a sparrow even look at the gourds. Maybe if all I had was gourds they might use them but in my area they flock to the house.

Yes, they seem to go for both. I've spent the last week chasing them. I have five in my sparrow trap right now. That makes 20 since I put it out at the end of Feb.

That idea that sparrows don't like gourds is an old idea, and I would love to see it go away because its not true. They probably like wooden houses better than gourds, but I will tell you for sure that sparrows will use gourds. The truth is, sparrows will use anything that they can find. The sparrows are easy to trap if you get the right kind of trap in the righ location
