2008 is shaping up to our best year ever in Central New York. A few weeks ago I was concerned that numbers appeared to be down as I was only seeing 15 to 20 martins at a time and only a handful of SY birds. While I still never see more than 20 martins at a time, nest checks to date are proving me to be mistaken. Last year, our best year ever we had 32 nesting pair and 151 eggs. So far this year we have 36 pair with 174 eggs and it looks like we'll have a few additional nests and eggs!!

Next nest check is tomorrow, I'll provide a final tally when the last egg is laid. I'll also try to get a better handle on the number of SY pairs. Last year we had about 10 SY pairs, 20 plus SY birds total.

Hopefully we'll have a better than average survival rate.

Same thing for New England states warmest spring i can recall. We needed it after all we are still in a recovery from the storm of 2005. But there numbers are building and should be back to normal by next year that
way we can send out some SY's to help repopulate New England again.
