The most recent info I can find on nest dropouts at this siteis from your magazine in 1988. I suppose this means that the little drop out hostel is the best current practice?
The link in the article took me to the PMCA shop, however I could not find one of dropout shelters. I expect I can design and build one of my own, but I liked the look of that one, and would like to buy one or else buy the plan for it.
The reason I ask is that I had three dropouts last year. In my ignorance,
I may have put them in the wrong holes and none of the three made it, well I found three dead in compartments at the end of the season anyway.
I had some difficulty posting a messageb on this topic, this is the 3rd attempt in three days. Forgive me please if any more than one of them gets thru.

Martin Colony History: Super colony

I think nest dropouts, or "jumpers" are best handled when placed in the original compartment. However, depending on the colony size, some landlords do not keep accurate records so if it happens, wouldn't know where to put the baby, and have the result you did.
The parents may or may not care for the little one if placed in a "shelter,", but I guess it would be better off then on the ground.
Others may chime in with questions on WHY you think they jumped out, which in a lot of cases leads to some kind of a problem, like parasites, starvation, neglect, or heat. Try and eliminate these common problems and you might not have this happen again.
Any more questions, please just ask!

Thanks Johnny,
Last year I built a Martin house because I thought it would be nice. I had no idea about the life and death of it all. I am much better prepared this year, or at least I have done a lot of research, which together with my positive and negative experiences last year will make a much better Martin landlord. I plan 4 day nest checks, nest changes, feeding if need be cooling mist here in texas as well as better ventilation. I'm building a T14 and reducing my 12 holer to 6 spacious compartments. Haven't decided on which type of sreh to go with. I'd like to make a router template for excluders but barring finding exect dimensions, I'll go with crescents.
Thanks for being there, this is a great site.
