Would it be possible to buy and release dragonflies in an area to attract martins? If so, where would I get some?

Gourdo,
I wouldn't know where, if at all, you could purchase dragonflies. Even so, I doubt you could buy them in such quantities so as to attrach martins. I believe nature takes care of this one!
But then again, I've been wrong before.

Gourdo. If you're close to a pond of any size, there should be plenty of dragonflies. They're normally quite abundant on and around ponds, and stagnant areas of rivers. It's also thought that PMs fly several miles to find food. CUL Lou

Gourdo,
I think PMs eat Damsel-Flies also. My Pair of PMs last year sat right above two KOI ponds I put in and you can see them staring at the Dragon Flies flying around. They don't swoop down that low to get them though.
If we get some 20 degreee weather here in the Panhandle and the PMs are here, I will try to feed them Crickets if I need to.
Rip.

Martins mostly feed very high in the sky, whereas other swallows, especially barn swallows, tend to been seen feeding more over meadows. So you'd need to pretty well fill the skys with insects, which of course you couldn't. In urban areas, I worry about how martins ever find enough to eat up way up there, but some insects, including dragon flies, also reportedly travel high and far.

Hi, I am not sure where to get dragonflies, but as much as I like them, I think it is the funniest thing when a mom gives her baby a big honking dragonfly! You would think the poor little guy would choke! It is a sight to behold. Anyway, I think you would be better off with a dawn song tape for attracting martins.
Fledge on!
