Hi Everyone

I have been using a S&S controller for 7-8 years now ( It works great by the way) I put it up yesterday and today when I got home from work I saw I had a starling in it and on the bottom of the holding cage there was a dead sparrow that the starling killed . I hate to think what would of happened if a tree swallow, bluebird or a martin would have been in there with that starling. I might try to build a separate holding cage attached to the main cage with a crescent hole . I have never caught a martin because of the S&S controller location but you never know, I have caught bluebirds & tree swallows before. Any thoughts or different ideas

I caught numerous bluebirds when I first put up my NB compact trap a couple of years back. I made a plate out of plastic with a 1 1/2 inch escape hole cut in it and mounted it to the cage on the trap I might lose a couple of small starlings but the bluebirds can easily get out.

Some people put 1 1/2 inch escape holes in the holding cage to let good birds out. Of course then sparrows will get away. Starlings would probably be able to force themselves thru a crescent escape hole if they try hard enough.

I think 1 9/16" hole can let out martins although it requires a bit of effort from them, and blocks all starlings.
