I am pleased to announce the launch of an interactive online database that I call The Martin Monitor Database. It can be used to submit annual reports on your colony including number of cavities, number of pairs, number of eggs, and number hatched and fledged. You may also report ASY and SY arrival dates and date your colony departed. You can also add a brief note on any significant events that affected your colony during the year.

After data is entered, you can review statistical data sorted by year, colony, and state. There is also a separate report for scout arrival dates. Most reports can be saved in Excel or Word format for additional data manipulation if you desire.

After you enter your colony information, I will place your colony location on a map so that everyone can see the locations of all those participating in the database. Send me your picture or a picture of your colony and I'll place that on the map as well.

At the present time there is no security built into the database. I would prefer to leave it that way, but we'll see how it goes and I may decide later to implement a password to access it.

Complete directions can be found at http://cipmaweb.org/martinm.htm . Please give it a try. If you have problems, my contact information and detailed instructions are on the page as well.

Please give it a try and consider participating. The intent is to assemble a significant amount of data from as many sources as possible that can be used to further the study and understanding of purple martins and to generate the interest of landlords so they are more involved and enjoy their martins more.

While your on the site, please visit the downloads page and download my free Electronic Prognosticator which is an Excel spreadsheet that provides very detailed statistics on your colony and can be used to assemble the data to submit online. So far there have been over 1000 downloads of the Electronic Prognosticator. It would be great if we had that many participate online as well.

Many thanks to members of the Central Indiana Purple Martin Association (CIPMA) who helped beta test the Martin Monitor database.

Questions or ideas for improvements are always welcome. Enjoy.

With my computer iliteracy I'm sure I will have some questions but it sounds like a great plan.

RLee,

Can not register my colony because the forum will not accept Canadian province under state. Hopefully you can easily fix it so I can input my colony data. If not, please let me know how I can get around the problem without a fix. Thank you,

Jerry,

Ray:

When I entered my data for 06, it told me I had too many characters in the "Note" box. I went back to 06 and shortened the notes. After I was done, I went to the state statistical sheet and it shows two entries for me for 06. All I did was go back to 06 and remove some notes but it read it as a second entry and is adding 06 twice in the statistics.

Roger,

Looks great! Thank you.

I'm having a hard time finding a description of the various regions? I found it when I entered my information, but now I can't get back there.

Wyatt, You can go to this page http://cipmaweb.org/ASP/colony_add.asp or on the blue navigation bar at the top of the entry pages select 'Colony Menu' and then "Add New Colony'. That wil get you back to see the regions.

Tim,
Don't worry about it, I went back and corrected it. No harm done. Go ahead and enter your annual reports.

Jerry,
My profound apologies. Don't know what I was thinking. I'm upgrading to VISTA right now and in a day or two should be able to make the correction to add Canada to the selections. I'll post here when it is ready. Thanks for the heads up.

And thanks to all for participating. PLease spread the word and let me know of any ideas for improvements.

Hi James,
Yes I did recieve your picture. If you go to the maps page you should see your site and picture and also the other colonies signed up so far.

Jerry,

You should be able to select Ontario, Quebec, or Mew Brunswick as a "State" but give me one more day to upload the code for Canada as a "Region".

Thanks,
Roger

To Ray Marr:

Thanks for using the Martin Monitor database. No, you did nothing wrong. I have to geocode the data and post the sites manually on the google map. I'll get to it as soon as I can.

Thanks to all who have participated in the Martin Monitor database so far. We still need more, however, to make the data meaningful. Please take a look at http://cipmaweb.org/martinm.htm and input your data. It's free and easy.

I noticed that I could delete or edit any landlords information. Is there a way to stop that? It looks great. When I add my site I am sure going to ask questions on how to set up.

RLee,

Thank for putting in Canada as region. However I still can not post under States any western Canadian provinces. These are from east to west. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. Hopefully you will be able to correct this so that some of us western Canadian landlords can participate in your data base.

Thank you,

Jerry,
My apologies again, didn't realize that ther were martins that far west. I'm travelling the holidays but will fix it when I return around the 29th and wll post to let you know.

Craig,
Yes I could enable security and am looking for an easy way. I initally wanted tro try it without, and then tweak a little after some entries were there so it would not be overwhelming initally. It's still a work in progress and I appreciate your input.

I have updated the geocoding of the Martin Monitor Database Google Map of the colony sites. You can check it out at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8& ... 1&z=5&om=1 or go to the main database page at http://cipmaweb.org/martinm.htm .

Please take a look and consider participating.
