My Martin Friends, the Ravenswood roost article that was in the Charleston Daily Mail newspaper the 10th of August made it in a Beckley, WV newspaper "The Register Herald". This is the paper I take & did not notice this article in todays paper but my wife did when she returned from work late tonight. Was sitting on the couch when she said "Purple Martins Darkened Ravenswood Sky". I said what, how in the world did I miss that. I told her I have already read it on the internet from the paper in Charleston. Of course I read it again. Believe me this is big here in southern WV as well. At least for me!!! I think one man own both the Charleston & Beckley paper.

It is great to see how many stories recently have been written in newspapers about the Purple Martins in general and also about the Roosts. The more recognition these wonderful birds get the better

Ronnie,

I have been looking for it on the internet. What day was it printed?

My Friend zboggess, the 13th of August on page 3A State & Region. My friend Roger Hamilton returned my call tonight. He is the one I mention in a earlier post & the first one to introduce me to purple martins back in the late 1970's. Also, his second home is in Ravenswood & just returned from there. He told me it was sight to behold. He also told me he had the biggest martin colony there with about 200 pair.

Wow! A 200 colony must be a sight.

I'm hoping with all of the morning visitors .....likely out feeding from the roost location.....that my little nest of one pair and 4 fledges will grow next year.

I think it would be helpful to the protection and understanding of the Purple Martin Roost if there were more Martin landlords in Ravenswood. Maybe your friend could encourage it?

Thanks,

Zelma

My Friend Zelma, Ripley is a very beautiful town. Have been by there many times & some years past went with a friend of mine that had some hunting woods outside Ripley to do some deer hunting. I am thinking there are several colonies in & around Ripley. Very glad you got a pair of Martins. Last year was my first with one pair with 4 fledged. This year had 4 pair with 15 fledged. What type of housing do you have? Roger is a very busy & private person but next time I talk to him I will ask if he is encouraging anyone. I know if you are doing everything right & I know you are, you will get many more next year. I am thinking much more than I did the second year due to the many Martins west of you. Hope so anyway. Best of luck!!!

Ronnie,

I now have all types of housing with the advice of long time veteran Purple Martin Landlord, Ronnie Dixon, and his wife.

Click on my profile, it gives you details.

Thanks for the good wishes and for encouraging your friend to help out landlords in Ravenswood.
