I wonder if I'll ever see anything quite so fascinating again. Maybe next year  . Here's a picture I took at the Ravenswood Roost.

Thanks to everyone willing to give us encouragement and advice. I guess next year we'll be the 2nd year "birds" !

We went over there to Elwood Street and parked at the Heritage Academy lot and mostly saw a tree full of starlings. Then we went on back the street to the Praise Cathederal and there was at least a hundred martins on a power line, however, it didn't seem like fireworks to me because it's ordinary to see a hundred martins at my place. There was some more coming in, but a lot of them were blackbirds. There might have been more if we'd of stayed till completely dark. We left at 8:30, did we leave too early to see the 10,000? I DO believe there must be a lot, I counted 540 in that one picture that was posted, i just didn't see that many, that's all. We went yesterday on the 4th of August, could they be disbanding already?

If you didnt see enough by 8:30 to impress you, then I would say it must be thinning out. The 2 nights I went down there, as soon as my watch said 8:00, the sky was already filling up. More came before dark, but at least half of the birds were already there by 8:30.

Sorry you missed it.
Looking at the radar, its not nearly as big as it was. This is from Saturday morning. http://www.rap.ucar.edu/weather/radar/d ... duration=3

Im going down tomorrow night to take another look, then I will be able to tell for sure.

Pat,

We thought the Purple Martins might move down to the Ritchie Bridge spanning the Ohio River. Could they have moved? It's on the opposite end of town.

We were wondering how long the roost would last...and how the current heat wave would impact the roost.

It would be nice to have had a bird banding project to track their movement.

Let us know what you find.

Martins are still there, I believe the roost has thinned, martins did not start coming in until about 8:30. There were alot more starlings around tonight, the martins still managed to drive them off though.

Penny, you are so close, It would still be worth the trip to see it. Get there around 8:30 and stay until dark this time.

There was a neighbor beating a pot under the trees tonight, It didn't seem to bother the martins at all. I went to talk to her about the martins, and she said she was worried about the health concerns. She said that Ravenswood is a bird sanctuary. I need to look that one up. Then a Ravenswood cop drove up and hit his siren, the birds still didnt move.

When I left she thanked me for the bird lesson. The whole situation is far from ideal.

Hey everyone,
The two newspapers are doing stories on this newly discovered roost. I've been busy helping with supplying information and pointing them to the long term landlords. Just a few of us including Pat Dawson, Ronnie Dixon and friends are attempting to educate people in Ravenswood that they are not black birds. As Pat, WV Martineer, previously reported residents have been banging on pans, police using sirens, not understanding what they have.

We met a news photographer at the roost last night. He had great still and video equipment. And the Martins put on a spectacular display, even thousands more than I have seen other visits.

Found one dead Martin along the street...upset me. A couple out washing bird doo off their car were complaining. Of course the photographer migrated right up to hear their complaints. Three of us landlords gave them a short PM course and told them how special the PM is and that each one of those birds came from someone's backyard birdhouse or gourd, and we care about them very much. We had a complete turn around in attitude.

Just worried others will not be kind to our birds. We're still trying! PMCA through Louise Chambers gave us some information for flyers. We took flyers and handed them out asking people to help protect them and allow them to rest at night. We took some flyers to the police and fire dept.since they have responded to complaints.

I am attempting to get this scanned attachment and another of page 2 posted.
