John,
What are you seeing at the coast. My 1 pair from last year still has not returned. Only 1 ASY male being seen in the neighborhood.

I've been watching for you A.P. since our colonies were so similar last year. Mine not here either, but still early yet. Numbers are still low here at larger local colonies....anyway, good luck. I think many more are on the way. Al

Hey A.P.!!!
I'm not sure about how they are doing or what they've seen along the coast this week, but I've picked up a bunch of new birds this week. I would say I've about doubled in numbers over the last day or so. That's going from about 8 to 16 pair. Hard to tell with gourds still available and all the movement around, but I've definitely see more martins. Hope you have a bunch coming your way!!!

Hi Holly,
Don't give up hope so soon. As I understand it there are still many martins that will be arriving. You and Don have done such a wonderful job as landlords in the past and I just know you will have the opportunity to do so again at your new place. Just give it some time. I am still waiting for martins to make their home at our place and thought for sure we would have had some by now since we had three pair last year! My faith has certainly been tested and yours is too, but you know as well as I do that God will bless you in His time. Just hang in there!

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Hi Sharon - Hi Holly.
Sharon - your birds from last season were probably younguns - they don't get here as early as the older guys. They will be back - this I know! It could be the end of March before they return - but, they will return!
Holly - my dear Holly. I have just realized that you and Don have moved. Only you and Don can truly know if your new area is PM habitat or not. Please don't expect PMs to nest in an area that is truly not a good site. I hate to hear of you being depressed and sad and I hate to think of you constantly watching the skies for that familiar silhouette - if he ain't gonna show...
You may just have to move again...
My best wishes for successful seasons to each of you. May God bless your world.

This is not a report from our friend and expert (JB) but my colony is about 30 miles north of John's, located about 5 miles inland from the gulf of Mexico, near a bay, intercoastal waterway and on a saltwater canal. Our housing is FULL!!! (offering 34 cavities, 27 ours, 8 for June, our neighbor whom we are assisting). We had a wave of birds arrive during the last 2 days and they have not stopped coming! It was a madhouse this morning with birds filling all perches and some sitting on our deck railing. All of these martins will not find housing here and will surely migrate!!
I had a confirmed Subby yesterday and counted an additional 3 today.

James Strickland FL wrote:Holly I can fill your pain. I live here in south florida and we have not seen but 5 martins. I had to move like you, but I was able to come back to the same house. But the houses were not up for last season and I lost my 4 pair to someone else. So I am starting over like you. But I am not giving up hope yet and I will never give up. I even bought some new gourds and a new house to put up just in case the SY'S show up and I get a pair or two. Just keep the faith.
James you still have 8 additional weeks, possibly more time than that. I appear to have 1 pair that is from another colony coming to visit, perhaps they are not happy on their site and there are so many other birds looking for more favorable housing...its only a matter of short time.
