Hi Bren,

Yes that is typical behavior and a good sign that the male is not too weak. He left late seeking company. Mates, other mature martins and those of his kind migrating through-to help build the colony. If he were not strong, he would be settling into the gourd without those interests, and recuperating as best he could. These older males, that I call alpha males, help to build a colony and recruit members. My first arrival in Corpus Christi has a mate, but flies through the skies long after the others. As martins pass through, as a small group of migrants did last night, he steers them in to the housing. We see a lot of migration here along the coast, and usually migrating martins leave the next morning. But if there are some bound for your area, he will lure them there. That is why older, established colonies usually fill up earlier than new colonies. They have scouts out working the skies to bring in other martins. May this guy bring in many to your housing and not be one passing through.

Congratulations on your arrivals and best wishes this season. jb

Thanks John..... :) .....I was outside all day watching this PM....when he arrived yesterday there was another male and female with him....the other 2 only hung around for a few minutes....this morning I did see what i guessed was him flying around with 2 other PMs but they didnt come here at all....I was so thrilled this evening to see him fly straight into his gourd with no hesitation....I just knew he was really one of mine until he flew and I didnt see him come back......I hope he is my alpha male like you said and is out there in the morning....I thought migrating PMs only stayed one night then moved on....he sure acted like he was here to stay....May you have the best season yet !!!!!.......Bren
