Hi PM Supporters...My first PM, an asy male showed up in B.R. in the evening, Tue 01/23/07. Its awful cold to support pm's, 38* at present.
The wx is pretty bad at the moment - been raining every day for the past
10 days! & very cold. I have some dreeze dried crickets which I will put in the 2 compartments that I have open at the moment. I have a total of 38
nests avail. Last yr I had 35 pr + 15 to 20 "hangers on" mostly asy's.
Last yr, my first PM showed up on 01/16/06. This yr my early arrival showed up at 5:30 pm & went right in 1 of my 2 openings. (almost dark) Its 01/26 & I have not seen the PM during daylight hrs. He shows up at dusk tho. I am 80yrs old & having a hard time getting around, but very excited over my new arrival! This is my 7th succesful year with PM's
I have 20 plastic (PMCA) gourds which aren't up yet. I have a t-14 house
which is up (2 openings).

joslef,

Congrats on a great colony. I can tell by your post how much you care about your martins. Good that you're providing Crickets for your early scout.

I have a male scout too who came in on the 22nd. He's been very quiet... (I would be too if I were all alone and not wanting to attract the attention of hawks) and slips quickly into his gourd each evening at dusk. It's hard to know how he's doing when I only catch a glimpse of him. But I guess the fact that he's out foraging for insects during the day instead of huddled up in his gourd is a good sign.

We're having a cold snap for Florida. (You Northerners will laugh.) It was up to 57 today and will go down to around 38 tonight. Tomorrow will be about the same but then it will be nice again on Saturday (72 high/58 low). It rarely ever gets colder than this and I guess that's why so many people have moved here.

I hope your male does well. I know you'll take good care of him, joslef!

Joslef:
Loved your post about your first arrival. As stated by everyone else, you, at 80 years young, are an inspiration to all of us. I wish I lived closer to you so I could at least offer to assist you with your gourds that you have yet to put up.
Undoubtedly, with being a successful landlord for seven years, your fledgings over that period of time were most likely the start of a colony for someone who lives nearby. Hopefully there is a landlord who lives close to you and reads this forum. If so, maybe they will contact you to see if you need any assistance. Just as people on this forum do everything they can to teach and assist new landlords, we all need to assist our senior landlords who have paved the way for us beginners.
God bless and wishing you the best of seasons this year and good health.

Hey Joseph,

I got my 1st one around the same time. The ASY male has already chosen a gourd and has a ASY female spending the night! Sparrows and starlings have taken interest also and the battle begins. Baton Rouge has 2 less sparrows to worry about.

Feel free to e-mail me or send message if you need any help. Good Luck! Weather should be better by Monday.

My goodness this seems so early! Good luck, you guys! Sounds as if you're both off to a resounding good year of Martining!
