Out with the old Trio- To Newly remodeled Trio House!!!

This is the beginning stage. First put blank doors on where the doors with holes were on all compartments, Then turn house on it's side, Line up the tunnels on side of Trio house and use majic marker to dot the holes on the aluminum! Then you drill the holes with a 1/4 drill bit! Then you make sure the 2 1/8 hole saw you drill is even with the tunnel floor, then the martin will go thru the top hole and down to the bottom hole to go in house! John!

Here are the tunnels on the Trio house!!!!! I used Stainless Steel bolts and lock nuts to bolt them on! They pushed right up to the metal even and didn't have to calk! John!

Here is the newly remodeled Trio House with tunnels! This house is a big improvement from the porches! I believe these tunnels will stop Owls and predators better and the porch dominance with the ASY males! I can't wait to see what my three pairs will think, that I had in this house this past year, come back to this newly remodeled house! I will let you all know! John!

Those look great, John, and you're right about them deterring the owls. Undoubtedly the female will build in the back of the nesting area, and no owl could look in and see her or the babies. Those females are going to fight over these compartments.

Hey John,
Man, that is one fine looking Trio! Now, I am going to think about "tunnelizing" my two Trios like yours! You may have started a trend! John the Trendsetter!
I believe martins, particularly the females, like a narrow foyer area that leads to the nesting chamber. This is somewhat like a natural woodpecker cavity that starts off with a narrow entrance area that gradually widens until reaching the nest. Such a restricted entrance greatly protects martins from owls, allows the martins to better defend their nest from the inside by blocking the entrance, reduces visibility inside the nest, increases the seclusion/darkness factor, and probably minimizes rain inflow directly into the nesting chamber. In my opinion, long and narrow cavities, either horizontal or vertical, are better nest sites for martins than round/square and wide.
Also, those are great photos!
Thank you for sharing this great idea with your Forum friends. Please keep us informed about the martins' response to your "tunnelized" Trio!

John, maybe I missed an earlier post about the "tunnels"; but could you briefly explain how the "tunnels" are constructed? I gave a Trio like yours, with modified compartments, to my brother-in-law two seasons ago, and it filled up immediately, with very successful fledging. I'm interested in perhaps tunneling it this season.
Thanks,
Ken

Thanks for compliments Ken, Dick, Joe, and Steve! The tunnels are made of plastic and the floor on the inside is already roughed up to give them footing to walk thru! And the porch on the outside does too! I hope you give the Trio House these tunnels because I think they will love them, Ken! Dick, the 2 1/8 holes in the house are flushed with the tunnel floors on the bottom! They will go in the top hole and then down to the floor of the tunnel to go thru the 2 1/8 hole that is drilled thru the aluminum Trio house then either make a left or right 90 degree turn to go to the nesting chamber! This is going to be the best thing that ever happened to this Trio house! I'm soo excited to see what my martins will think and dowhen they see this mansion!! HA! By the way, these tunnels come with crescents, clingers, round, or blank for you to put your own SREH on!! Thanks John!

John, Your Trio mods got me motivated this morning, and I went out this afternoon and scranged up some nice vinyl fence straps for new entrances. Great job on the Trio!

Thanks for the compliments Al! Dick, you lift the blank doors up just like you would if it was the original door with the hole already in it! Thanks John!
Hey John,
Your Trio tunnels look great. I would like to do that to mine but they are so old that they may not be able to take the change. They are not in the best of shape. With all the modifications that people are coming up with, it may be time to buy a new Trio house!

P.S. Spent the day removing and burning old pine tree killed by Katrina. This will open up flying lanes for the PMs!!

Hello TigerPitt,
All you have to do is drill some holes then bolt the tunnels and that is all you have to do! I think your old trio should be fine doing this! Also cutting your old trees and clearing them out will be great for the martins! They will have alot more flying room and see the Hawks better! John!

I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.
At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.
At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.
Great pics John! Thanks for posting.

Hello Dick,
I was going to say three pairs this coming year because I only had two pairs last year! But you say full house?? OK! We will see Dick! This house has four compartments with tunnels! There were two pairs on one side of the house becsause last year there was a ASY male that controlled his side on the other trio house and one side of this house too! All on a Multi-purpose Pole! So we will see who is closer on this contest! Ha! John!
