I have 1 young male or possibly a female PM that has been hanging around my house for about 4-5 days. No nest building. Only see 1 PM. I have several PM decoys on my house. Could this PM possibly be trying to find a mate and thinks that the decoys are prospects? At this time I have no other PM in my house.

I would vote male SY! I have the same thing here. The male goes out and finds the potential site and tries to lure in females. My male has tried to lure in two females so far but no takers..yet! He has been here for over a week. It might be getting late in North Carolina, but there may be still a little bit more time as I do not know your nesting period down there. Maybe some other North Carolina landlords will chip in to tell you how much longer. My male was at my site for over a week checking things out til he started bringing back females.
Hi, This is the first internet forum I have responded to, and I am having trouble getting a message to go through. I posted a topic on Monday and submitted it, but didn't get any responses and can't seem to retrieve my message to repost either, so I thought if I responded to someone else's posting, I might have better luck.
I live in Salem, VA and have been trying to attract Purple Martins since last year. My husband gave me an 8-unit Quad Pod system for Christmas, and I already had an SK tri-level plastic unit. I finally saw my first two Purple Martins last Friday around 3:30 PM. They appeared to be either young Martins or females, and each was a little different in markings so my feeling is that one was female and one male, but I'm not positive. One of them actually ate a few seeds from the feeder they perched on. They checked out my SK unit, and hung out at our house for a couple of hours then flew off somewhere. They returned on Saturday around 2:30 PM and brought a third Martin with them. This third one was dark all over as best I could tell. This one also checked out one of the units on the SK house, flew about a bit and then left. The original two hung out and swirled about for several more hours before flying off. I have not seen them since, and I was wondering what this behavior might mean. Is there a chance they will come back, or does it mean they were not satisfied with the accommodations we have available for them? I would be interested in getting some input on what to expect.
