I have an old Trio Pioneer Musselman House with the porch railing still on it. I've converted to the 6x12 compartments, it has the Owl Guards from the PMCA installed on it. I just purchased and installed the Excluder doors from the PMCA onto this house. Should I, to help the Martins navigate the openings, remove the porch railings? Also have the porch dividers on this unit and am wondering about removing them for better access to the compartment.
I was experimenting with a couple of SREH's with porches on my SuperGourds with the Owl Guards purchased from the PMCA. I lost my 8" clearance they recommended from the opening with all that hanging out front of the SuperGourd. I bent the Owl guards out and up so the Martins could navigate on to the porches. I wonder if I lost the effectiveness of the guards by doing this? They (Martins) do like these aluminum rods for perching, though.
I guess what I'm asking is how the Owl works. From reading here and elsewhere that the Owl hangs on to the gourd and reaches in and scares the Martin out, and grabs him with the other foot, correct? Wouldn't the aluminum rods sticking out front keep them from getting to and grabbing ahold of, and flapping the gourd?
Thanks

I'm not sure exactly how your railing is set up, but I have one SY female that uses the railing on my house to help pull her out of the compartment. I do have SREHs. Kinda neat watching her use it over and over...
