Wahooo, saw my first SY male yesterday (no mistaking him, about 8 beautiful purple feathers poka dotting his chest at my Oneida Lake site. May 17th is early for my site, last year the first I noticed was May 26th.
Regarding housing preferences this year, the ASY birds have almost filled my old ice beaten up Trio Castle. I bought two new Trio Mussleman houses to add to my ice beaten up Musselman. Made two three story houses and mounted them on a dual purpose pole (all my Trio compartments have been enlarged). The ASY birds have filled most of the compartments fom the old house and are only using one or two of the new apartments. Funny how they prefer the old beat up tried and true housing. None of my new seven natural gourds are being used and only one of my nine Super gourds and one of my two Big Bo gourds are being used. Have no eggs yet (usually 1st egg is laid about the 28th of May) so the jury on housing preferences is still out.

It's shaping up to be a great year!!!!

They love the Trio houses here as well. The gourds so far have not been popular this year.
