and it came back with 743 entries.

I scanned over maybe 20 of these and didn't see what I was looking for.

I have read some about who likes porches or not and who likes large or small porces etc. I myself think that porches would be what I would like to see as well,so the question is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

How big is to big,,,,I have an integral porch/tunnel walkway designed that presently has a 3 1/2" by 9" porch. This is a proto type and I will get Emil blessing's or "Dick ,you screwed up here and this is why", before I lock into a final design and start fabrication of my next years setup.

Sorry no pics until final proto type is approved. hahahaha

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

Dick, you must get up early, thats what I do..about the porch, a porch can be any size that you like. One thing to watch for is that if a martin gets knocked off the porch, make sure that it cannot get hung between the porch and the gourd. If you leave a small space, say about 1in, then a martin can get stuck in that space.

Originally, I made the porches about 2in square, and only 1 martin can sit on it. Since I enjoy watching martins, I made a 3in long porch with a perching rod on the end, and that was done simply so I could watch them.

Some people don't like porches. Suppose that 3 babies climb out about 1 or 2 days before they fledge and they are all sitting on that porch. This is an ideal situation for a hawk to catch them before they can get back into the house. For this reason, many people do not use porches. I didn't use porches on gourds for many years, the martins will still use the gourds.

There are trade-offs for everything, so basically, you put up what you like best. The martin hobby allows everyone to customize their colony to exactly fit their own style.
