In NE Ohio what housing would you recommend to start a colony?

Hi,

There are four important things to consider:

1. Where do you live?

2. What kind of housing attracts martins in your area?

3. What kind of housing will provide the best longterm breeding success in your area?

4. Martins have such a strong desire to breed in an established colony that they will accept almost any type of housing there.

2 and 3 are dependent on 1.

2 and 3 are not necessarily the same!

I recommend that you read through the following recent threads that help explain the complexity of the issue:

We strongly recommend that you locate local colonies, talk to local landlords, and learn what type of housing is most likely to attract martins in your area. We also recommend that you offer a mix of housing.

This PMCA study on the best housing for breeding success in the north is very enlightening:

Finally, read the description of my site and how I attracted martins with an aluminum house then made the transition to all gourds:

Good luck, Mary
