During the meeting on April 10, 2006, at Cy-Fair College, the speaker Clay White/Assistant Professor of Biology said that he would band new fledglings for people in the area.

Does anyone know if there is a charge for this banding?
How old do the babies have to be before he will band them?
Is this part of a study he is running for the college or for the state?
Has anyone had their birds banded by Clay White?

Please send a responce if you have information!
Thanks,

Hi Jack.

Clay is indirectly related to our south Texas banding team. I cannot speak for him, but here are my thoughts pending his getting in touch with you or vice versa. Clay banded a number of martins in the Houston area last year using a single federal band. This year he is permitted to color band and has coordinated with our efforts to the south. He will be using purple bands, alpha letter H, preceded by 3 numerals with an abbreviated state code. In addition he is required to place on a federal band.

I do not believe he plans on charging for his banding. If he does it will be reimbursement for the cost of color bands--18 cents each and any abnormal travel expenses. What every bander will require of landlords where they band is accessible housing-housing that lowers easily and compartments that allow free access to nestlings. In addition, it is imperative that landlords have accurate nest records so that qualified nestlings can be easily located and older nestlings prevented from jumping. The optimal age range is 12-22 days for banding. They can be banded as young as 9 or 10 days and as old as 24 days under limited and highly controlled conditions.

Another factor to consider is that many nestlings hatch and are bandable during a very short time period. It is impossible to be at all places during that time frame and it is up to the bander to choose what places he feels to be most important.

Banding data from our project is being shared with PMCA and Texas Parks and Wildlife, along with the banders permitted under our master bander. A number of subpermittees have banded about 400,000 birds of different species under that master permit during the past ten years. I suspect Clay's data will be shared in like manner, as well as with the Cy Fair college. I hope I have answered your questions subject to Clay's approval.

John,

Thanks for the prompt reply to my questions. At my last nest check, on Sat. 5/6/06, I had one nest that has five eggs and another with one egg.

I'm hoping that by 5/13/06 the other nest will be filled as well. I probably will try to get Clay White to band the first nests hatchlings in late May, if he is available. I'm located in Tomball, not far from Cy-Fair College, so it will be a short trip for Clay, if he agrees to band my birds.

Any information on birds from last years banding returning to their birth sites, in the area? Also, where can I go, on the web, to track this banding progress?

Thanks again for the information.
