I know this doesn't have anything to do with Martins, but they are so pretty and thought I would share with viewers.

I took almost the same exact pic today. I had a male on my hummingbird feeder also. The female stayed in the tree. They have been around for a few days. Seems every year I see a couple of them on my humming bird feeders.
Great pic, Thanks for sharing!

Wow! fresh from the Tropics. I would highly recommend Scott Weidensaul's book on bird migration; "Living on the Wind". In it he mentions a Central American tree pollinated largely by Baltimore orioles, after pollination the outer petals of the flower fall away to reveal inner petals the exact same color as the oriole's breast, this apparently serving to keep ther orioles away from that particular blossom thereafter.

Durn it! Those are pretty birds. We've tried for 3 years to attract them, but having almost no tress, I think our chances are slim. We did get a pair of house finches on the oriole feeder. They enjoy the bits of orange, sometimes nibble at the marmalade and LOVE the sugar water. As a matter of fact, they are hooked on it. If we dont have it out (during cleaning) they land on the windowsill and beat their wings against the glass until we put it back out.

I took pictures of my Orioles today also. I have them quite frequently.
Problem is, I am having a hard time deciding if they are Baltimore Orioles or Orchard Orioles. The pictures I took today will help decide that. The song sounded like Orchard Oriole but they looked more like Baltimore Oriole, so we will see.
If you are interested I will post the pictures.
(Nikon FA w/300mm lense). I also took pictures of my nesting BlueBirds.
Unfortunately, my PM house is still vacant. Dawnsong playing everymorning etc. I just have to be patient. Now is the exact time for the young ones. Wish me luck

I have to add a comment that I did not know Orioles liked Humming Bird Feeders. I have a Humming Bird feeder but never see them there. Only Humming Birds, which I have not seen at the feeder yet this year. I think it would be too close to the house for Orioles tho.

I've had an oriole feeder several years now, and they hardly ever use it. I was told awhile ago that this person believes the bought (dry) mixture is not strong enough, that the Orioles may prefer sweeter water. So, this year, I'm going to try putting in Humming bird strength water. See if they'll go for that. I know they sure like the oranges I put out. I've seen many days where I will have to replace oranges twice or three times a day. They simply devour the insides. And I always pick and choose the largest oranges I can find. CUL Lou

Thanks.
Do you just hang the entire Orange?
I think I will put one where they frequent (odly enough, a Cherry Apple Tree).

zymurg,

We will cut a small tree branch off at an angle with about 3" left. We then cut the orange in half and insert it onto the tree branch spike. The female Orioles seem to like the fruit while the males prefer the sugar water.Thanks.

I started out with hummingbird feeder, which seemed to attract them, but the perches are so little that I ended up buying the Oriole feeder. The powder mix says to use 1 part mix to 4 parts water. I do 1 part mix to 3 parts water. I attracted another female to it today. I haven't bought any fresh fruit yet, but will this week. I have 3 Orioles, 8 Martins, 4 Western Kings, 1 pair Eastern bluebirds and too many finches to count and too many hummingbirds to count. If you put out the right feeders and control trash birds, you can attract just about anything. Good luck all.....
