When I put up my new gourd rack facility,,,,,,should I include a perch above the rack, let the rack itself be the perch(it will have 5- 30" bars on the top level) or put up a perch independaent of the rack but nearby.

I don't have any extra perching. Martins perch on the arms of my 3 gourd racks and on the small extra perching "stars" on top, mounted in the pole caps.
However, I am sure they would love extra, taller perching.
You cannot have too much perching.
If an overhead powerline happens to run near their housing, they will perch on that.

Dick,
I have an extra perch between my 2 houses and have intalled wooden dowel sticks on both the houses. They seem to prefer perching on the house as opposed to the seperate perch. They do use it, just not nearly as much as they do the perches attached to the houses. I think they just like being near their nesting cavitiy.
