I was watching these PM's come in and noticed(or heard)that what I assumed to be a femalesitting on top of the house and was singing a bit. Do the females sing or do I have a case of mistaken identity??

Hi Dick
You may want to go to the martin biology tab on the home page and do a little study. I don't have the link in front of me, but there's a recording of the martin "chirpping."
Both males and females have various chirps, but only males perform a longer "chirp chirp chirup." It's not a warbling sound like a thrush, but a beautiful gurgling sound. Now, you may have been looking at a subadult male which resembles females with a lighther breast. Often with the sun in one's eyes or at a distance you can use the male voalization to ID subadult males.

I have heard that recording,,,,,,this bird was not singing a long drawn out just making some noises maybe all over in two or three seconds.
This one hangs out with an AYS male ,while three others(SY males I think) that are there, kinda keep to themselves.

Well yes the females do make a vocalization that lasts two or three seconds, I just woundn't call it singing -- sort of pleasant chortling (sp?). In fact, they can get pretty noisy with it.

John, glad to hear that as I was kinda afraid this may be another SY as I'm still to green to tell one from the other. Its patterns of activity with the ASY male would indicate female.
whew glad of that
