Cindy and BigAl54, that sure is good to hear. This is a great start! Keep a close watch out on your new colony. There are all kinds of threats out there, and wonderful observations to make. Making contact with other martin folks around there might be good if you have not already done so. You will always have your long distance martin friends here on the Forum, of course. There will be lots of things going on now that you will probably want some more opinions on. About the only problem on the Forum is folks trying to figure out how best to help someone. Everyone just wants what is best for the martins. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Good Luck this season!!!!

Hi Cindy& BigAl,
Looks like you are going to be a LL this year. I observed the same behavior this morning. I just recently got my first SY male and he has 2 females with him now. They started nest building 3 days ago. A couple new ones came in and the male would chase them away. After a while he would come back and round up his girls. He must think the whole house is his
Have a great season, Don

Did the topic of this thread shock anyone else besides me
? I'm not sure that attracting aliens (I refer to visitors from the red planet) is the real purpose of this forum. Perhaps you can convince those martians that starlings and sparrows would be ideal for establishing on Mars and get them to take them back with them when they go.
I give Big Al credit - if I had space invaders loose in my yard I would be calling homeland security instead of casually posting it on the purple martin forum
! Seriously, congratulations and best wishes for your finest martin year ever. If you find yourself totally over-populated give some of those martins a map to Southwestern Michigan and send them our way!

K.C. is right, Big Al. Misspellings are OK here. But us lonely Michigan wanna-be's get mighty jealous when you guys go on about all those martins showing up like that! Then you go and rub it in by implying you also have Martians - man, that hurts
!
BTW - I saw the movie Mars Attacks. In the movie they use an old country song called Indian Love Song to chase them pesky Martians away. If you haven't seen the movie check it out - you'll love it!
Still playing the dawnsong dusk to dawn and anxiously watching the empty Michigan sky up here for martins.... Very lonely, very sad
.

Cindy,
Please, please, no apiologies necessary!!!! I was only kidding. I think it is great that you are having success and I am happy for you. If you think about it, every martineer that successfully fledges more martins increases the chance that someday martins will find their way to our empty site here in Southwestern Michigan. So your colony is important to me and anyone else that desires to host their own colony someday. It is just not as easy to attract them in Michigan as it is in many other parts of the country. Fellow Michigan wanna-be's like myself, Fred Kaluza, and many more are just a bit envious - see Fred's post at http://www.purplemartin.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2485 and you'll understand.
I must admit that when I saw the original post (MORE MARTIANS) I couldn't leave it alone - I had to reply. The way I see it, if you're seeing martians in your back yard you really do have something unusual going on there. Or maybe you and Big Al have been tossing back a few cold ones while watching the birds. Either way, thanks for the chuckle
!
Keep doing what your doing with your martin colony and have a great season. Remember, what you (and everyone that hosts martins) are doing is important!

K.C. is right about the fun aspect of martineering of course. But there is a much more serious aspect also. This world is in serious trouble and our environment and many species of the animal and bird kingdom are doomed if more people don't start exhibiting the type of caring you find here amongst purple martin enthusiasts.
My observation indicates that martineers concern goes far beyond just purple martins - extending to other species of birds and animals. We may seem obsessed and a little weird to outsiders, but I think that overall the people that frequent this forum are well grounded in reality. They are also willing to learn and act on what they learn in behalf of our feathered friends. We should never pass up an opportunity to pass this enthusiasm to others. In particular, anything we can do to inspire young people to get involved is hugely important.
