Came home from work for lunch and my starling-shootin' husband said, "Honey, you've had a martin on the gourd rack for the past 15 minutes." Grabbed the binoculars, and sure enough a beautiful blackish-purple male! Oh, I'm SOOOO excited! I keep going to the kitchen to watch - he flies off and returns. So far, I haven't seen him be able to negotiate the crescents - although he's definitely trying! Gosh - I hope he doesn't give up! He's also been stationary, perching and chirping at the top of his lungs. Is he calling for a female or calling to other males saying, "Hey guys, check out this gourd rack. Nice digs! ?"
I have noticed that the other two martin houses in the neighborhood seem to be overrun. Maybe my visitor is tired of being cramped and thought it was time to move.
Decided I'd leave the ready-made starling nests inside the gourds.
"This could be the start of something BIG!"
Hey, isn't that a show tune? Guess it's appropriate cause I feel like singing right now! LOL
We're leaving for CA tomorrow for a week. Maybe when we get back we'll have more birds! Thanks for letting me share.
It's a Red-Letter Day!!!
