Martin Colony History: Area is rural. Offer 28 compartments...metal housing (Lonestar Goliad) & Supergourds all w/crescent entrance holes. Purple martins are abundant here and eager for quality, well maintained, safe housing. Expect near 100% occupancy this season.

Any ideas about how I could modify my Super Gourds? They have round entrance holes. The starlings are much too interested in them. Id like to make them crescent.

Hi Craig;

I modified some supergourds years ago and they word like a charm. I used vinyl siding material. A 4"X4" piece rounded at the top with a crescent hole cut in it. I put the adapter over the round hole, marked and cut the excess corners out. Either pop rivit or use small screws and nuts to secure the crescent adapter to the gourd. In the pictures the reason for the the two small notches in the bottom of the hole was for clip on porches that I used at first until I made the existing ones. Hope you can get some ideas from the pictures.

Joe.

I like those baseball cap canopies. They ought to help keep them a little dryer and cooler. I may have to try that for next year.

Great job on the conversion!

Good luck!

Craig,

S&K sells entrances that allow one to switch back and forth between round and crescent entrances. See page 18 of the '06 PMCA catalog.

I add tunnels to modify mine

I agree with Emil. Tunnels are the way to go. They keep SuperGourds much drier in wind-driven rains.

Sandy Bunn sells tunnels with several different entries and optional porches.
Not too difficult to install after a bit of practice.
