The skies over our lake "lit up" with martins late this afternoon. What a beautiful sight and sound. Dozens of "passes" and several visits were made to my PM rig which has now been completely opened (with breath held) to accommodate this event.
With the reports from central Illinois and the weather we've been having, I am not surprised... and can think of no explanation for these happenings other than THE RETURN OF THE SY's! Despite the need for decorum on this forum, you will excuse me if I shout HOT DIGGITY AND WHOOOOO HOOOO!
My "determined" ASY male wasted no time courting a mate. In fact, they are bedded down together in one of my gourds. Unfortunately, (as seems to be "the curse" in these parts) they (she) chose a round holer! This is what I feared... but also what I predicted. SO ANYWAY, I have my first "pair" for this year.... and my work cut out for me!
As for the rest of that "sky full" ...I feel certain that whatever of my 10 fledglings survived were among them... or will be returning very soon! I am not the least bit concerned that more of them did not decide to stay the night. After all, they have spent the last 9 months living in the trees. Tomorrow is a NEW DAY and the season is just beginning!
Good luck to everyone... and to the rest of you Hoosiers, I hope you are ready 'cuz THEY ARE HERE!

I saw my first PM the other day flying around fairly close to my house. Yesterday on my way to work I saw what I thought was four PM's perched on a power line right near the pole. As a newbie I was not able to tell if they were PM's or not. I have my dawnsong CD on the way. I think I am in a prime location if I can get them to the house to have a great colony. Keeping my fingers crossed.
