SNAKE,
Thats good that you have martins interested but deal w/ those trash beaks, either trap or shoot those scum beaks to give your colony a chance.
Good luck

snake,
You can get a S&S repeating trap right here on the pmca website under Shop /Traps,it's the best investment you'll ever make, i have one and just love it, it's simple to erect and work, i'm handicapped and even i can work the trap with no problem. If you don't want to buy the S&S repeating trap , they also have plans you can buy to make one yourself. The Beauty of these traps is that they work for you all year long even when the Martins are long gone and if you place the trap close to any tree a Martin won't go near it so you don't have to worry about catching any martins. I have had my S&S repeating trap several year's and it works Great on all those Scum beaks.
Good Luck

ok, i will look at that, now where is the most effective place to place it in relation to the housing or does it really matter? do you bait it,or put nesting material in it or what?klcretired wrote:snake,

Snake, you have to open up some housing if you have martins wanting to take a look. In your situation I would open up a bunch and deal with the unwanted guests whenever I could. The martins need a place right away. I think opening several or all spaces would allow the martins to find a place while you are dealing with the others. Since you do not have returning birds they have to see something to move into, and since you have the s&s I think you have to accommodate all until you get control.

SNAKE,
With the S&S repeating trap you don't have to do anything at all just sit back and watch from time to time and you will see that the S&S's can't refuse that big ole Round hole in the trap and seeing your catches is a breeze your cage w/ door is at eye level. If you email me i can send you a pic of my S&S repeating trap, oh, and my S&S trap is 15 ft from all my martin housing ,my email address is listed below:

ok, this bird looked like a male and only set on top of my S&K ,left for a few and came back and did the same thing and then left for the evening. So you say open a few compartments or gourds and do the eviction thing with the dirtbirds?tidfam wrote:Snake, you have to open up some housing if you have martins wanting to take a look. Definitely open up several cavities for this visitor to explore and claim. You can deal with the competitors. Martins can handle some competition from S&S, but they won't stay if you have no cavities open.
