Last year I had one pair of martins after 17 or more years of trying. Now I have been watching out my living room window (computer in front of window) for any signs of martins. None yet. But I am wondering if they will call when they first arrive if they are by themselves. If they do, then my next question would be if anyone knows how to rig up a way to hear the calls outside while I am inside. My living room window is heavy thermopane, and I cannot hear the birds outside. So I was thinking of a type of microphone outside that would have a 60 foot wire to come into a window and wind around in the house to reach the living room.
any ideas?

Sharon,

I was out in the garage and heard the first lone scout. Chirped twice and It was fairly loud. I went out and he circled a couple times and landed on one of the houses. I had all three houses at about half mass. I walked out to raise the opposite house up. The male then flew to the next house closer to see what I was doing. He watched me for a minute or so then took off over to the pond a cross the street. I have seen him come back a few time for a fly bye, but not land. I had seven pairs last year that fledged around 28. Five of them were asy males and females. I thought they would have been back by now. I had around 22 martins all together living there and have seen around 40 at the end of last season flying around and landing on the houses. As of yet nothing...not sure whats going on. I guess I just need to wait.

I like your idea of a mic or something on the houses and a speaker in the house. Maybe a security camera outside pointing at the martin house. You could maybe at leat see them.

good luck craig!

Keep looking, my first ones arrived in SE Kansas about 7 days ago, with 1-2 sleeping over. Today I had 8 and they all seem to have decided to stay. It sounds like Texas just had a big arrival, so maybe yours are on their way. Good luck.
