Looks to me that the martins migration into New York slides east along the southern edge of Lake Erie from Pennsylvania into New York and thence eastward along the Finger Lakes. I would thought that they would slide along the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Must be that much colder along Ontario. On the other hand the martins are up by Milwaukee in Wisconsin and don't seem to be effected by the cold influence of Lake Michigan Will be interesting to see how and when they make their move northward to the southern shore of Lake Ontario. Of course this observation is totally dependant upon who reports.

You seem to have evaluated the Migration route in what seems to be a logical manner with them spreading East then North as the weather warms. On Thursday the 6th, Martins were reported in Consecon on the North shore of Lake Ontario , 60 miles west of Kingston. Each year I wonder why and how we get them before a lot of people in your area. The closest report of Martin sightings on the PMCA and the Nature Society scout sites is in Erie, Penn. so it is always a suprise the next published sighting is up here, But then, we are dealing with th?"Purple Martin". Hope I have added 1 little piece to your puzzle. Have a Nice day.

I think a lot sometimes, to no conclusion. :) From my viewpoint, in North Central Pennsylvania they seem, to be roughly using the major waterways as flyways. I see the Mississippi, Ohio to Erie flyway flyway being stronger than the Chesapeake Bay up the Susquehanna or further East the Delaware River . My wondering mind ponders the slightly warmer climates associated with the rivers first and then the volume of flow being the next consideration.

Someday I guess I will find a good book that will enter into all the things that create and controls a flyway.

Frank, that's not fair, you're ~100 miles north and last year your martins martins arrived the same day (April 10th) as mine. Also seems like the north shore of Ontario gets martins before the south shore. With the Tug Hill to the east of me, Oneida Lake must be the end of the line unless some move up the Oswego River to Ontario.
Docgipe, if you ever find that book, let me know, I'd like to buy a copy.
