Northwest indiana...It finally hit 45 today, cool and cloudy...Everykind of bird is here except...PM...My house is blocked in for know..If i were to open it i would be cleaning it out 3 times a day...I am the only one in my area trying to attract them so i am kind of on my own...This will be the second year for me trying...Last year i dident even get a drive by but i still think i have to manny trees..The house is 40 feet away from any trees but the property is surounded by pine trees all around and they are 30 to 50 foot high...

One question,Whats the name of a bird that looks like a english sparrow andthe male has red on top of his head.....The two look alike....

And to get into the conversation of killing S&S...I took my old PM box and put it on a pole 10 feet up and painted it black and some other colors and blocked the intrences 3inches in and i have my own shooting galeary..

The kids love it..S&S are the only birds they are aloud to shoot and they know why they are aloud to do it...I have 12 othe r bird houses on my 2 acr..finch and bluebird with feeders around...So far i i stoped counting the S&S kills..I have a cockerspanial that retrives then for us when we have the family outing on the back porch...

O well still trying..

Stanton, My guess would be a Common Redpoll. If you feed the birds a field manual is a big asset. I have used for many years a book called- An Audubon Handbook -Eastern Birds. It has served me well.

The only other one i could think of would be a house finch.

Stanton21. Yes, it's probably the male House Finch. Another one is the Purple Finch, which is nearly identical, except with more red on its back. The female house finch looks very much like the female English House Sparrow, except more streaked on her chest/belly. CUL Lou
