Will a martin build the same type of nest in a box as in a gourd? I have read where it helps to make mud nest and rub mud around the outside of the hole on boxes to help pull martins in. I did all of that. But I have never read anything on putting mud nest in gourds. All I put in my gourds is 2 or 3 inches of pine needles and that is it. Should I add anything else or not?

Don, I don't think you need to do anything else..The very best thing is to have a wide open area, so if you have that, you probably don't need anything else if there are martins in your area...Sometimes it takes longer for them to come to your place, you never know when they will decide to stay...requires a lot of patience...good luck
